Surprisingly there are two very different ideas of how easy it is to lose weight while breastfeeding. You have the people who swear that because you’re breastfeeding THATS why you lost all the baby weight. You also have the people who swear that because your breastfeeding THATS why your body is holding onto the extra fat so readily.
I’m here to say neither is true. Yup. Neither one. Your weightloss more than likely has nothing to do with whether or not you are breastfeeding. Your diet and level of physical activity are either the reason you’re losing weight or the reason you are not losing weight. Simple as that. How am I so sure? I breastfed BOTH of my children (still breastfeeding Emilia at 6 months old) and I have had two very different postpartum weightloss experiences. With Nicholas (my first) it took me ELEVEN months to get back into my pre-pregnancy jeans. With Emilia I was back in my size 4 jeans comfortably at 4 months postpartum. The difference? I was active and stuck to a much healthier diet during my second pregnancy. I also have not used breastfeeding as an excuse to eat all the extra food.
When I was breastfeeding Nicholas my extra 500 calories I ate to ensure my supply didn’t get affeted was cookies, ice cream, chips, candy, or any other treat I wanted throughout the day. With Emilia my extra calories are worked into my current meal plan and I just seriously have added in more protein, veggies, and fruit. BIG DIFFERENCE in my diet which has led to a BIG DIFFERENCE in my weightloss.
You may have to play around with the exact amount of extra calories you need to consume to maintain your supply but trust me when I say that when you are eating a healthier diet your supply will be better. At least it has been in my experience. I’m able to pump more, my breasts feel fuller, Emilia is visibly chunkier than Nicholas ever was, and yet I’ve still lost weight more easily this go around.
